چکیده

With the LHC the technology of NbTi-based accelerator magnets has been pushed to the limit. By operating in superfluid helium, magnetic fields in excess of 10 T have been reached in various one meter-long model magnets while full scale magnets, 15 meter-long dipoles, have demonstrated possibility of safe operation in the 8.3–9 tesla range, with the necessary, very tight, field accuracy. The paper reviews the key points of the technology that has permitted the construction of the largest existing superconducting installations (Fermilab, Desy and Brokhaven), highlighting the novelties of the design of the LHC dipoles, quadrupoles and other superconducting magnets. All together the LHC project will need more than 5000 km of fine filament superconducting cables capable of 14 kA @ 10 T, 1.9 K.

Investigation of suitability of the method of volume averaging for the study of heat transfer in superconducting accelerator magnet cooled by superfluid helium

In the field of applied superconductivity, there is a growing need to better understand heat transfers in superconducting accelerator magnets. Depending on the engineering point of view looked at, either 0-D, 1-D, 2D or 3Dmodeling may be needed. Because of the size of these magnets, alone or coupled together, it is yet, impossible to study this numerically for computational reasons alone withou...

RHIC IR Quadrupoles and Field Quality State of the Art in Superconducting Accelerator Magnets

The interaction region (IR) quadrupoles [1] for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) [2] are the best field quality superconducting magnets ever built for any major accelerator. This field quality is primarily achieved with the help of eight tuning shims [3] that remove the residual errors from a magnet after it is built and tested. These shims overcome the limitations from the typical to...

A Common Coil Design for High Field 2-in-1 Accelerator Magnets

A common coil design concept for 2-in-1 superconducting accelerator magnets is presented. It practically eliminates the major problems in the ends of high field magnets built with either high temperature superconductors (HTS) or conventional superconductors. Racetrack coils, consisting of rectangular blocks built with either superconducting tapes or cables, are common to both apertures with eac...

Sis100 Fast Ramped Magnets and Their Cryopump Functionality for the Operation with High Intensity Intermediate Charge State Heavy Ions

The FAIR SIS100 accelerator at GSI Darmstadt will be equipped with fast ramped superconducting magnets. The high current Uranium beam modes with intermediate charge states, require ultra low vacuum pressures which can be achieved in long term operation only by cold beam pipes acting as a cryopump with stable temperatures well below 15 K for all operating cycles. The straightforward layout for r...
